CHILDREN AND TEENS IN FOSTER CARE
In our home state of Massachusetts, more
than 10,000 children and teens are in foster, institutional, or other substitute care, and nationwide,
half of a million politically voiceless kids wait for a safe return home or for a new family.
For far too many, that day never comes, and the reality for this
population of kids is stark and unacceptable. Many end up
institutionalized due to a lack of available homes and age out of the
system with no safety net, no family to fall back on and no plan for the
future. After suffering untold abuse and
neglect, they deserve so much better. Please join us in making the plight of the child protection system an
issue of relevance to all levels of our legislature, increasing funding,
raising public awareness, and reaching out to
support foster children, foster and adoptive families, kinship solutions, and social workers. To
learn about foster parenting, visit
www.nfpainc.org. For more information
about adoption, try
www.adoptuskids.org. And if you are in any position to do so, consider
becoming a foster or adoptive parent.
BREAST CANCER
Barnhart Gallery is a business born of breast cancer. Designer and founder
Kelly Barnhart enjoyed an 18 year career in television, media and
communications when, reaching age 40, she stepped down from a dream job as
a parenting magazine editor to voluntarily undergo a bilateral mastectomy
and total hysterectomy. Having lost her mother, grandmother, and many
aunts to breast or ovarian cancer, testing positive for the BRCA1 "breast
cancer gene," and having a four-year-old son, the decision to be
proactive was an easy one to make. During a lengthy
series of surgeries and recuperation, Barnhart kept her mind and hands
occupied making her signature semi-precious stone holiday ornaments. With
hundreds made, a trip to the Boston Gift
Show put Barnhart Gallery into business. Do you or a friend have a family history of breast cancer?
Read Kelly’s story, and find links
for vital information about genetic testing.
